Ask any little girl what her two favorite colors are, and she’s likely to say pink and purple. Ironically, the same two colors signify two of her worst nightmares as she grows older: breast cancer and domestic violence. October is Awareness Month for both the deadly disease and the devastating, violent crime. It is also a time to celebrate the amazing survivors of both.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in every three women has been a victim of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within her lifetime, and one in every four has been a victim of severe physical violence. Created in 1985 as a victim services program of Christian Associates of Table Rock Lake, Harbor House Domestic Violence Center has protected and still protects thousands of women from across the country.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Because of COVID-19 we will not hold our annual “Candlelight Vigil” which honors survivors and those who have passed on as a result of domestic violence. Also our Spring Fling and October Gala have been canceled for this year only.
Instead, we are selling raffle tickets to raffle off a quilt each Saturday in October at the following locations from 8am-3pm:
- 3rd-Kingsaver Grocery Store, Branson West
- 10th -Harter House, Kimberling City, MO
- 17th-Ma’s Café, Kimberling City, MO
- 24th-Christian Associates Thrift Store, Branson West, MO
- 31st-Christian Associates Thrift Store, Branson West, MO
The ticket prices are: 1 for $1, 7 for $5 or 25 for $20. The drawing will be held Oct. 31st at 3pm at the Christian Associates Thrift Store, Branson West, MO. The quilt was handcrafted and donated by the wonderful ladies of Wrights Chapel, Crane, MO.
With the COVID-19 outbreak it has been a difficult year for us. Donations are down and the need has increased. We are operating at capacity much of the time. We survive on government grants and each year we are expected to do more with less money. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers and know that any donation would be greatly appreciated. These families deserve a chance for a new life, one free of domestic violence.
Please join the movement to end violence against women. If you or a loved one are a victim of domestic violence, please call the Harbor House Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.877.507.7233.
