OUR HISTORY

1985 — The Beginning

In 1985, Christian Associates of Table Rock Lake, a nonprofit community service organization based in Kimberling City, Missouri, recognized a growing need for services for victims of domestic violence. In response, Harbor House Domestic Violence Center was established.

For the next 22 years, Christian Associates nurtured and guided the domestic violence program, providing safety and support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. During this time, women and children were sheltered in nearby hotel rooms and apartments generously donated by local businesses.

2008 — A New Setting for Healing

In January 2008, Christian Associates relocated Harbor House’s women and children to the shores of southwest Missouri’s Table Rock Lake. Survivors were safely housed in condominiums in southern Stone County, where they remained for the next six years in a peaceful and supportive environment.

2015 — A Permanent Home

By June 2015, Christian Associates established a permanent home for Harbor House Domestic Violence Center. Located near the organization’s supporting offices, this new location offered stability, convenience, and renewed hope for residents working toward lives free from violence.

2017 — Becoming Independent

After serving thousands of women and children with compassion and care, Harbor House entered a new chapter in June 2017. With more than 32 years of experience as its foundation, Stone County’s only domestic violence shelter filed paperwork with the State of Missouri to become its own entity, transitioning toward independent nonprofit status.

2020 — A New Era

The year 2020 brought unprecedented challenges with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, compounding the already complex work of supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

On January 1, 2020, Harbor House officially began operating fully as its own organization. This new chapter included the formation of a dedicated Board of Directors, new leadership, and a passionate, experienced advocacy team. Together, they continued the mission of helping survivors and children heal from the trauma they have experienced or witnessed.

2025 — Looking Ahead

Today, Harbor House continues to build on its strong foundation while looking toward the future. Guided by decades of experience, community support, and survivor-centered values, we remain committed to providing safety, advocacy, and hope to women and children affected by domestic violence.
